Fall Foliage: Our Picks on Where to Go
Summer may be about over, but there’s plenty of natural beauty to still explore. Check out our list below.
While the lavender fields are ideal to visit in June and July, saffron blossoms in the fall. Also remember it’s a great time to visit the vineyards as olive and grape harvests are underway.
In September, it’s a great time to attend the annual Totally Thames Festival in which there are plenty of concerts, art installations, and the lovely local scenery.
Scotland is alive with vibrant fall colors in orange, gold, and red. Visit Loch Awe, Loch Faskally, and Comrie. Head to the Royal Botanical Gardens and Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh.
Head to Harriman State Park, which has more than 200 miles of hiking trails, as well as 31 lakes and three beaches. The Silver Mine Lake Trail reaches the top of Black Mountain where you can see a combination of the park’s fall foliage along with New York City’s skyline.
Also try Breakneck Ridge which is a little more an hour from Manhattan and offers breathtaking views of the Hudson River and Hudson Highlands State Park.
With its panoramic natural landscapes comprised of mountains, lakes, and forests Vermont is a great destination. Check out the views along Lake Champlain or take a walk in Smugglers Notch, just north of Stowe.
Visitors to the area can experience the best of Nantucket’s coastline and dramatic cliffs. Explore the historic lighthouses and 19th century mansion. Charter a yacht and sail the Harbor or learn about lobstering.
Enjoy weekend events such as the Maritime Festival (September 29), focused on the local seafare history and the fun Cranberry Festival (October 6-7).
Newport, Rhode Island
Explore dramatic cliffs, cascading waves crashing below and gorgeous mansions along Cliff Walk. Don’t forget to descend the Forty Steps! The trees surrounding the mansions are part of a Norman Rockwell painting. Go apple picking at the Rocky Brook Apple Orchard and try some wine at Newport Vineyards.
