How did Super Bowl Get Its Name?

The first American Football League-National Football League Championship Game was held in Los Angeles on January 15, 1967, and industry officials were struggling to come up with a name which is why it was originally called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Ultimately, AFL Founder and Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt deemed the term Super Bowl. Hunt had the idea as his son used to play with a very popular toy from the 60s called Super Ball. While it started as a “word of mouth” it caught onto the media and officially was titled Super Bowl during the fourth championship in 1970 even though the NFL really didn’t care for the name.
Bowl was created as it reflects the shape of the stadium. Hence, you have the names Yale Bowl and Rose Bowl – names which appeared in the early 1900s. As a result, the word ‘bowl’ became synonymous with the big postseason game of football.
