I’m not sure if we really need a reason to have a party, but with Cinco de Mayo just around the corner it’s time to take out your sombrero. If you can’t find yours, you can always have one made along with a customized mariachi suit and a guitar. To add to the theme, consider having a piñata made with your face on it – or perhaps a face of someone you dislike. Be daring – have one shaped like a butt or breasts. You can even have one made just for your pet. Be outrageous in its contents – candies, buttons, condoms, socks, travel size accessories like toothpaste, cosmetics – basically anything that is fun and represents you and the type of guests attending. This will add extra fun to the party.
Other things to include in the festive day are exotic salt shakers and a margarita machine. No party is complete with a mixologist who will concoct special cocktails made in your honor. As an event planner living in Miami where the Cinco de Mayo celebration is prevalent, I offer some great catering ideas for your party. Make a cinco table of tacos and enchiladas offering an array of accompaniments ranging from varieties of guacamole to salsa. Be creative on the desserts offering up flans and Dulce de leche.
If you’re lazy and not in the mood to have a fiesta at your home, consider the local happenings in Miami where established places like Ortanique (Caribbean cuisine – everything that Cindy Hutson makes is delicious!) in Coral Gables or the membership only Soho Beach House (try the fish tacos) are offering fun festivities on Sunday. One of my favorite spots is Cantina Beach (just love that guacamole) located at the Ritz Carlton in Key Biscayne. Sip tequila while looking out at Biscayne Bay and listen to the mariachi band. Regardless, your local event planner Victoria Hoffman will be making stops at her favorite haunts to celebrate the battle of Puebla.
